Since 2016 and at the request of the EAES (European Association of Endoscopic Surgery), the IHU Strasbourg organizes a hands-on workshop during the EAES annual congress. This course mirrors the hands-on courses given as part of IHU’s endoscopy courses. It allows about 20 participants to start or improve their skills in endoscopy. Some participants then choose to join the courses offered by the IHU.
The EAES presents
As new surgical techniques continue to evolve, the use of flexible endoscopy is increasingly important for surgeons. Modern digestive surgery needs leaders with endoscopic skills that are well defined. Common sense suggests that the surgeon who loses the opportunity to learn surgical endoscopy will soon disappear.
This EAES hands-on course presents a unique opportunity for surgical residents, fellows and practicing surgeons to learn the basic endoscopic skills required to form a foundation in the practice of flexible endoscopy and to be exposed to cutting edge techniques such as ESD, POEM, and endoscopic suturing.
Objective
Basic as well as advanced flexible endoscopic techniques will be taught by experienced surgeon-endoscopists, with didactic endoscopic images, video clips of clinical cases and hands-on sessions – You will learn key endoscopic procedures in a structured way, under the mentorship of world leaders in the field with access to the newest technologies and techniques:
- Endoscopic management of common surgical complications (bleeding, perforations, fistulas, stenosis…),
- Endoscopic resection techniques: EMR, ESD and full thickness resection,
- Submucosal tunnelling techniques to treal achalasia, submucosal tumors, and gastroparesis: POEM, POP, STER…,
- Endoscopic sleeve gastroplasty and suturing techniques.
At the end of this course, the participant will:
- Understand the value and indications of preoperative endoscopy,
- Become familiar with the endoscopic management of common gastro-intestinal surgery complications such as bleeding, perforations, leaks and fistula,
- Understand indications and basic steps of EMR, ESD and POEM in a controlled and supervised setting,
- Become familiar with endoscopic suturing techniques for morbid obesity and GERD,
- Understand the indications and basic steps of ERCP and biliary endoscopy.
