Obesity and Metabolic Surgery
Sleeve or Longitudinal Gastrectomy
Principle
This is a procedure in which about 2/3 of the stomach is removed in order to create a gastric tube. Food passes through to the intestine faster.
Features
This procedure is restrictive because it reduces gastric volume and allows a feeling of satiety quickly. It also involves a hormonal mechanism by reducing the number of cells secreting ghrelin, the appetite hormone.
How does the Intervention take place?
The procedure is performed by laparoscopy (5 to 6 small skin incisions are made).
The operating time is approximately 1 hour.
The hospital stay is about 2 to 3 days.
Advantages
It is a simple, quick and uncomplicated operation. The part of the stomach that is resected is removed. There is no change in the alimentary tract. The passage of food through the intestine is accelerated.
Expected Weight Loss
It is in the order of 60 to 80% of excess weight, looking back over more than 10 years of results.
Vitamin & Nutritional Deficiencies
Possible deficiencies in vitamin B12, B1 vitamin D and iron.
There are usually no other nutritional deficiencies.
